After the unveiling of Android P at Google I/O , android couldn't be much better. It is probably one of the major upgrades to the entire android ecosystem. With artificial intelligence and machine learning as the core of the system, android P might change the way we interact with our phone.
Most of the features were well predicted though in the earlier post. But lets see whats new surprises about android are.
When will it arrive?
It rolled off to Pixel phones, Essential phone and Mi Mix 2 this week but the upgeade still remains a question for other devices. However the public beta can be installed on some devices.
Notch Support
After the trend of iPhone X Android also tried the notch with the new support for notched devices. To match the overall symmetry of the notifications time can be seen on the left with support for different status icons.
Dashboard
The Dashboard is one of the major update to android ecosystem and will allow a user to view the time spent on apps and other services. Dashboard will also allow to see the number of notifications received during a day and thus give a overall control panel like interface to monitor the phone's activities.
Time Limits
Android p will allow a user to set time limits on specific apps say, 15 minutes or an hour every day. After that time, the app’s icon will go gray and when you try it android won't let you and a popup would appear saying that you have hit your daily time limit. However you can still use it if you want by going to settings and removing the time limit.
Gesture Navigation
The familiar on-screen back, home and overview buttons with a back and home button was replaced in Android P. This time tapping the home button goes to the home page of the launcher, but swiping up once from it activates overview, while two swipes opens the app drawer. This feature might be influenced by Iphone X which also introduced gesture based navigation.
Slices
Slices are information from apps directly within the Google search app that gives quick functions. However developers need to build in the capability for their app for this feature.
App actions and app predictions
Android P laid the ground of AI and machine learning by introducing the app actions feature predict the task you are trying to perform, showing a shortcut to take you straight to the section of a particular app that deals with it. It will also predict which app do you want next by learning your app usage patterns.
Conclusion
Android P seems as a big upgrade to the entire mobile ecosystem though it might be viewed as a strong 'after effect' of introduction of Iphone X. But in anyway it will surely make smartphones easier to navigate and get a good overall control over our apps.
